Tommy Millard

(jug, bones, spoons - 1/1939-4/1939)

Born: 5/19/1911

As a Blue Grass Boy: Hired as a comedian and MC, Millard also played jug, bones and spoons. He joined the band in Asheville, NC, in early 1939 and left shortly after their move to Greenville, SC that spring. His nickname, "Snowball", was given to him by Bill Monroe.

Before and After: Before joining the Blue Grass Boys, Millard led his own band, called the Blue Ridge Hillbillies. After leaving Monroe's band, Millard moved back to Asheville and reformed his band. Among the performers who played with him were Red Smiley, Red Rector, and the Sauceman brothers. Shortly after World War II, Millard left show business and went into the ministry.
