Bob Brozman

Truckload of Blues

Sky Ranch, 1991

Steel guitar virtuoso & musical curmudgeon Brozman turns in an all-blues set, with mixed results. His playing is as stellar as ever, and suggests that the Missisippi Delta actually flows right through Hawaii. His blues growl sounds a bit too affected, though, and the four tunes with an electric band don't quite make it. He's much better off solo, or backed by piano & bass, as he is on most of the 17 tracks. About half the tunes are written by Brozman (or cowritten by him and his wife, CJ MacDuffee), and they stand up well alongside the mostly-obscure blues chestnuts. Any fan of acoustic slide guitar needs to hear Brozman.
